We Plant & Care for Trees
All people deserve trees, and all people should have the opportunity to plant and care for them. Many places in Durham need new trees, and we are here to help plant and care for them. During tree planting season, we plant trees at schools, community centers, and other public spaces. We also host tree give-a-ways so people can plant trees at their house. During the summer, we care for our public trees through individual actions and the TreeKeepers program. We work with individuals and communities to bring trees into their neighborhoods and care for them.
We Advocate
We advocate for policies that will preserve forests, enhance tree planting, and address environmental justice. Durham's trees are inequitably distributed and represent a physical history of racist redlining practices. We are losing hundreds of thousands of trees to new development, and need investment in trees where people live now. Losing these trees and forests contributes to climate change, extreme heat, air pollution, poor health, higher crime, and broken communities. We advocate for the City and County to require more forest preservation and tree planting during development and to invest in planting trees in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color.
We Educate
We sponsor research about Durham's trees and educate ourselves and others about the importance of trees to Durham. Trees create health, wealth, and happiness for Durham residents. In the face of income and health inequality, climate change, and aggressive development, now more than ever we must understand the importance of our trees and how to make them resilient, sustainable, and socially just. To this end, we initiate and disseminate research about Durham's trees and their impact on Durham, host educational events, and provide many other opportunities for folks to learn about their trees.
We Partner
We work with groups across Durham to use trees to further their own goals. Whether it is doing workshops in classrooms or planting trees at churches, we work with the many amazing groups in Durham to bring trees to their community. We are always looking for new partners, so if you know a group who is interested, please reach out!
