1. Equity: Providing equitable access to trees, tree canopy and forests, and to the benefits they provide. This includes consideration for all aspects of diversity and need, including race, wealth, age, ability, belief, gender, sex, documentation status and more.
2. Partnership: We work in partnership to lift up other groups, and amplify the voices of others. We utilize trees to help meet community goals
3. Nature Based Solutions: We believe that trees and forests are essential parts of the solutions to many of the challenges facing our community. From reducing the effect and impact of climate change to bringing health, wealth and happiness to our community, we seek ways to strategically utilize trees and forests for the benefit of Durham and all its inhabitants.

Five Year Goals
- Goal One: Directly expand and care for Durham’s tree canopy with a centering on justice
- Increase tree planting and care across Durham focusing on vulnerable populations by sponsoring and hosting tree plantings, tree giveaways and tree care events
- Expand the care of trees and forests through appropriate planting, pruning, pest management, soil management and cultivation of resilience
- Create partnerships with Durham’s municipal governments, HOAs and developers, as well as community-based organizations
- Increase tree planting and care across Durham focusing on vulnerable populations by sponsoring and hosting tree plantings, tree giveaways and tree care events
- Goal Two: Systematize tree and tree canopy protection and expansion through advocating for just municipal laws, policies and programs
- Introduce and promote tree friendly policies and laws while expanding citizen’s knowledge with and engagement around the process
- Track and influence development, new laws and policies, and other formal programs related to Durham’s trees and forests
- Advocate for Durham City and County to perform more forest preservation, tree planting, and tree care
- Goal Three: Provide tree and forest education
- Host events and disseminate information about trees and forests, particularly in Durham
- Support and amplify information and events provided by others
